The game saw quarterback Trevor Lawrence depart the game in the fourth quarter due to a right ankle injury, and the Jacksonville Jaguars lost 34–31 to the Cincinnati Bengals on “Monday Night Football”.
In lieu of the injured Joe Burrow, backup quarterback for the Bengals, Jake Browning, gave Jacksonville his best Joe Burrow imitation, helping Cincinnati take a 21-14 lead late in the third quarter. However, the Jags quickly regained the lead with two touchdowns, the second of which was made possible by Josh Allen intercepting a Tyler Boyd throw.
After Lawrence fell down and was carted to the locker room, Browning responded with a brief touchdown to tie the game at 28-28. He then led a late field goal drive one possession later. After a field goal drive of his own by Jaguars backup C.J. Beathard, the game went into overtime, where Bengals kicker Evan McPherson won it with a 48-yard field goal.
With the setback, Jacksonville’s record dips to 8-4, while the Bengals’ record rises to 6-6 — and 1-1 since Burrow’s season-ending right wrist injury.
With the Bengals’ backup quarterback making his second career start in a primetime game against an AFC division leader, the team will have hope that it can still contend for a postseason spot.
With 354 yards and two touchdowns (one passing, one running), Browning completed 32 of his 37 passes. It was his wide receivers who dropped two of those incompletions. Cincinnati has a chance to make the playoffs for the third consecutive year if it can duplicate this kind of performance. The only other team that Cincinnati still has to play with a healthy starting quarterback is the Kansas City Chiefs.
Audacious forecast: Chase Brown, a rookie running back, will receive more touches during the remainder of the year. Prior to placing the fifth-round selection on injured reserve due to a hamstring issue, Cincinnati wanted to observe how the player would perform in the ground game. In his second return, Brown was called upon early and frequently. He also shown his potential as the big-play running back Cincinnati has been lacking for the past several seasons. The team’s longest play from scrimmage this season came via Brown’s 31-yard rush in the third quarter. In contrast, Joe Mixon gained 35 yards on his first ten carries. The Bengals may get a closer look at whether Brown can start for the long run in the last five games of the regular season.
The Jaguars may have lost even more when Lawrence sprained his right ankle late in the fourth quarter. The team fell to Cincinnati in overtime.Lawrence suffered harm with a left tackle. Lawrence’s right ankle was trodden on when Walker Little was shoved back. He fell to the ground, seemingly catching his leg, and he needed help getting to the locker room.
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will get an MRI on Tuesday after initially being diagnosed with an ankle injury after the team’s 34-31 overtime defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals, Insider Tom Pelissero.
Following the game, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson announced that Lawrence will have more testing on Tuesday but provided no other updates.
After the loss, Lawrence seemed to be able to stand on his ankle in the locker room, but he was cautious not to put any weight or walk on it, according to Cameron Wolfe. Lawrence left the locker room wearing a walking boot after being observed informing his teammates about the injuries. According to Wolfe, some of them appeared to be in high spirits after chatting with him.
